Trump administration cuts are leaving food banks, including those in New Jersey, in a predicament. The Community FoodBank of New Jersey president and CEO Elizabeth McCarthy said they receive around 16 million pounds of food from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. "But that is down from almost 25,000,000 pounds, so it's just that's a real gap that we are concerned about covering," said McCarthy. This a hard reality for the food bank, one of the many around the nation that will see budget cuts from the USDA, totaling more than $1 billion. "The portion that was for us was about $10 million," said McCarthy. "It was $26 million for the state of New Jersey as a whole." USDA food supply isn't the only target - the same goes for Local Food Purchase Assistance funding, or LFPA. “We certainly know that the USDA has cut of one program we had, which was to buy local food purchasing, so farmers, producers in the state of New Jersey that were helping at our pantries," said McCarthy. "That was about a $6 million cut.” They say that their LFPA should be financially OK through October, but they’re not the only ones being impacted. "The LFPA cut will absolutely affect farmers in the state of New Jersey, producers who are really relying on that income as part of their business model," she said. Anyone who wants to help is being asked to visit Community FoodBank of New Jersey's website. Once there, sign up for a volunteer shift to do a food drive or to make a donation. “And we're really going to need those resources more than ever," McCarthy said. The Community FoodBank of New Jersey works with about 800 partners, pantries, soup kitchens and child-feeding programs to help the almost 1 million food insecure people who live in the state.
