Crime in Newark is on the decline, according to new data from the city’s 2025 end of year crime statistics.
Officials said that despite a deadly mass shooting in the city in November, homicides had the biggest drop. There were 31 killings in 2025 – the lowest number in the city since 1953.
The stats also show that robberies fell 38% and aggravated assaults dropped by 14%.
"I would have to say that a lot of this happens because of what is happening in our police department, intelligence-based policing. We have better strategies, we have better technology, better trained people,” said Mayor Ras Baraka.
The mayor also took a moment to thank the Office of Violence Prevention, Brick City Peace Collective, and “all of our partners here in the City of Newark.”
He says that all their efforts combined have helped to maintain a “consistent and stable reduction of violence and crime throughout the city.”
Overall, Newark saw a 19% reduction in crime for the year.
