A male scooter operator is in critical condition after police say he crashed into a vehicle in Newark early Saturday morning.

Newark police officers responded to the scene of the crash along the shoulder of Route 1 and 9 at approximately 5:47 a.m.

The male driver of the scooter was taken to the hospital where officials say he is reportedly in critical condition.

The driver of the vehicle struck by the scooter remained at the scene.

It was not immediately clear what led to the crash.
