Some New Yorkers say they are still having trouble getting the trash bins they are required to have by New York City.
In July 2024, the city said residential buildings with one to nine units will need New York City trash bins. It comes as part of their effort to clean up the streets and mitigate trash.
Required residents could face a fine from $50-$200, depending on the amount of violations if they don't have the bins starting this June.
The easiest way is to order these online, but the New York City Department of Sanitation's website says ordering online is currently unavailable.
The website is referring people to Home Depot, but Lester says that's not a realistic option for all New Yorkers.
“The bus is sometimes not accessible for certain people and so forth. So, you know, definitely should be able to go online for that," said resident Kordell Lester.
Even though June is still months away, a resident named Travis says people need to have the resources in able to prepare.
“It just sounds very inconvenient. What if they don’t get it at that time what if it’s sold out at Home Depot," said Travis.
The New York City Department of Sanitation says it's not a supply issue, but that the vendor is resolving home delivery issues before they can take more online orders. It also says it is working to find a solution and that people who ordered the bins and are still waiting for them won't be fined.
The vendor Otto Environmental Systems also says it is working as quickly as possible to get the online ordering service back.
