The New York Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation into the death of a Brooklyn man following an encounter with police on June 19.

Officials say 48-year-old Lamin Simmons died after being shot by NYPD officers inside a building on Kosciuszko Street.

According to the Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation, officers responded around 5:45 a.m. to a 911 call reporting gunfire inside the building. When officers entered, they allegedly saw Simmons holding a gun and retreated.

Police say officers from the Emergency Service Unit later entered the building again and encountered Simmons, who allegedly refused orders to drop the gun and fired at officers. Multiple officers then discharged their weapons, striking Simmons.

Simmons was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. One ESU detective was also shot during the encounter and underwent surgery. The officer is now in stable condition.

Authorities say two firearms were recovered at the scene.

The Office of Special Investigation will assess the circumstances to determine whether the officers’ actions warrant further investigation under state law. Officials noted the information is preliminary and subject to change.
