Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine signed legislation Wednesday that prohibits anyone on the animal abuse registry from possessing pets.
Under the new law, any convicted abuser found in possession of an animal will be charged with a class A misdemeanor.
This comes after the SPCA’s recent discovery of dozens of ill and deceased cats inside a Bohemia home.
Officials say the law is an important step in advancing animal safety and combating abuse.
