A new study found that New Jersey ranks 15th in the country for lottery spending.
Residents spend an average of $378 per 1,000 people annually on lottery tickets, higher than the national average of $284.
The study by online casino platform Pulsz used 2023 lottery spending data from the U.S. Census, looking at income from ticket sales, prize payouts and population figures.
With over 9 million residents, New Jersey had a ticket sale income of $3,506,991, with a prize return rate of 63.6% - the 31st highest percentage in the nation at a total of $2,230,286 in prizes from total ticket sales.
Spending averages are still significantly lower in New Jersey than Massachusetts, which took the first spot with an average of $858 in ticket sales per 1,000 people.
Virginia residents saw the highest prize return numbers, typically getting back 77 cents for every dollar spent.
