New Rochelle held its annual Black History Month event on Thursday, honoring two individuals who give back to the community every day.
Leaders say that both are hard-working individuals who serve the community by giving back, but in different ways.
Sylvia Hamer is the executive director for HOPE Community Services, an organization known for its emergency food services.
The other honoree is Denise Clark. Clark owns Habib's Atmosphere is Hair, a hair salon located on Main Street in New Rochelle.
Both Clark and Hamer say being recognized is a true honor, and they're looking forward to inspiring the next generation.
"Be faithful to your clientele and to your community and they will be faithful back to you," said Clark.
"Service is very important. I started at a very young age, as I mentioned, with my grandmother," said Hamer.
