Students at Perth Amboy High School had to wait about 30 minutes before entering school on Tuesday due to new metal detectors in place. On Monday, students had to wait more than an hour outside.
The changes were brought on by the school board and include metal detectors, updated surveillance cameras and bag checks. News 12 New Jersey is told aids will also now be stationed at bathrooms. This is an upgrade to the security wands previously used to search students for weapons at the high school.
The enhanced security measures come after 11-year-old Smailyn Jimenez from Shull Middle School was stabbed in February by another classmate on his way home from school. This brought on protests from parents and students about bullying, violence and fights at both schools.
"It's hard to get into school. But you know, you gotta do what you gotta do," said Chimdike Uzoegwu, a junior at the high school.
His older sister Victoria says "I don't want to be at home thinking if my siblings are safe and I'm glad they are taking this measure."
Pat Paradiso, the president of the Perth Amboy Federation of Teachers, says the teacher's union is on board with the changes.
