New Jersey City University may soon be getting a new name.
The school could be called Kean Jersey City through a partnership with Kean University in Union Township. The NJCU Board of Trustees voted unanimously to pursue a “strategic merger.”
NJCU has not been able to balance its finances. The school was appointed a state monitor in 2023. It was ordered to pursue a partnership with a “fiscally stable” public school.
The Murphy administration is on board with the plan.
"Maintaining access to high-quality post-secondary education for students and the community, who have long benefitted from NJCU's local presence, forms the basis of our shared commitment to the institution's future,” a spokesperson wrote.
