New details are emerging as police continue investigating a violent weekend in the City of Newburgh that sent multiple people to the hospital.

Police say at least one person was shot around 1:30 a.m. Sunday near Liberty and East Parmenter streets. Neighbors told News 12 they heard a burst of gunfire before watching officers flood the neighborhood, shutting down streets for hours as detectives processed the scene.

“With their guns drawn… they had the drones out. It was crazy. For hours,” said neighbor Jeff.

Police confirmed at least one person was taken to Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital. Authorities have not released information about the victim’s condition or announced any arrests.

News 12 has since learned from sources that police are also looking into another reported shooting late Friday night on West Parmenter Street.

Sources also tell News 12 there was a separate stabbing on Galloway Avenue early Sunday morning. News 12 was told as many as three people made their own way to the emergency room looking for help, reportedly arriving around the same time the shooting on Liberty and East Parmenter streets was unfolding.

Police have not confirmed those additional incidents or said whether any of the reported violence is connected.

For neighbors who witnessed the heavy police response, the weekend was unsettling.

Marisol, who has lived in Newburgh for 25 years, says she’s seen the city become safer over the years, making a weekend like this all the more disturbing.

“It’s changed since I’ve moved here. I’ve been in Newburgh 25 years and it’s really changed,” she said.

Another neighbor, Jeff, said despite the weekend’s violence, he doesn’t believe it defines the city.

“I’ll tell you what though… there’s more youth around here that are good than bad,” he said.
