Bridgeport Police Officer Gamel Dawkins, 34, returned to his family's home at 289 Willow St. Tuesday for the first time wearing his police uniform. "It's very emotional for me to come back to the spot where my baby brother was shot to death - and to be here as a police officer," Dawkins said. Dawkins was sworn in, along with the latest class of fellow grads from the Bridgeport Police Academy, on Jan. 22. "I decided to pursue a career in law enforcement after Clinton was killed because I wanted to help keep my community safe, so no other family would ever have to know the pain my family knows," he said. Dawkins' brother, Clinton Howell, 12, was shot to death in front of the family's home on Dec. 8, 2018 - a week before Christmas. "Even though arrests have been made in the case, the only true justice will come to our city when we work together to prevent other little kids from being gunned down in front of their homes," Dawkins said. "Now I've come full circle - and I'm actually doing something to stop the violence. I'm not just talking the talk - I'm walking the walk, literally," he said.
