Select bus stops around Monmouth and Hudson counties are part of a New Jersey Transit pilot program testing out AI-powered signs that tell riders when the bus is coming. Customers can still check on the NJ Transit app or with the MyBus text tool.
New York City-bound commuters Elmira and Leon, of Manalapan, told News 12 the new signs are more convenient.
NJ Transit says the signs are installed at these locations:
  • Hoboken - 15th Street & Willow Avenue
  • Hoboken - 9th Street & Washington Street
  • Union City - 31th Street & Bergenline Ave
  • Union City - 31st Street at JFK Boulevard
  • Jersey City Heights - Congress Street at Palisade Avenue
  • Manalapan - Route 9 North at Gordon's Corner Road
  • Howell - Aldrich Road Park and Ride
“We’re trying to improve the customer experience, reducing stress in everyday travel," said NJ Transit Head of Innovation Luna Katbeh.
“Vehicle tracking information is critical," said NJ Transit Customer Advocate Franck Beaumin. "It’s something the NJ Transit team has been working on a long time.  There are different solutions that have been identified. None of them have really been implemented just yet, and I’ll be supporting the most reliable one.”
News 12 found that the signs are still a work in progress. Although the signs and app synced up during a test in Manalapan - and the bus arrived at the correct time - the sign listed all the stops as coming during the p.m. hours, in the morning. The accessible audio, when a voice reads the information out of a speaker, was impossible to hear along busy Route 9, but worked well at the quieter Howell Park and Ride.
The solar-powered signs are part of a year-long pilot.
