A celebration was held in Crotona Park East on Tuesday for the Grand Opening of a new affordable and supportive housing development called the Frederick Shack Residence.
The Frederick Shack Residence consists of seven floors with 79 studio apartments.
Of those units, 55 of the apartments will be for supportive housing, with the remaining studios being offered to the community through a lottery.
Kandra Clark, director of Police and Advocacy with Urban Pathways, spoke to News 12 about the rent pricing and the building's amenities.
"Our rent here for the community starts as low as $700 a month. We've really created an atmosphere that includes this courtyard. There's onsite laundry, onsite trash. There's a kitchen on-site so we can help people cook, and teach people to cook," shared Clark.
The Frederick Shack Residence also has a community room allowing computer access for residents.
Some people in the Crotona Park East neighborhood said they are happy to see the new residential building come to the area.
"Glad to see this area of the Bronx is finally getting some affordable housing built up as is necessary. A lot of the buildings here are old and need to be replaced," said Parris Woods.
"I think it's great. You know, it's an interesting area. There's a lot of projects in this area. And these are newer, less problems, you know? Unlike the NYCHA and all that other stuff that's going on," shared Reuven Klayppholz.
According to Clark, the building will officially start moving in residents in May.
