Residents in the Town of Newburgh are voicing growing frustration over a house on Victoria Drive that has remained untouched and abandoned since a fire nearly a year ago. The home, which caught fire last October, still stands in its damaged state, and neighbors say it's become a blight on the community.
Despite the passage of time, the property remains privately owned, with no bank or insurance company stepping in to facilitate repairs. Town officials confirm they are pursuing legal action against the homeowner, but residents say that’s not enough.
“This has really been bothering the whole neighborhood and dangerous,” said Eben York, a local resident. “We take pride in the Town of Newburgh. This area is nice and quiet it’s very disheartening that nothing is being done.”
Town officials say they are in the process of declaring the property unsafe and are awaiting an engineer’s assessment. According to the Town Supervisor, if the owners fail to make the property safe, the town will intervene and take action themselves.
