Families in parts of Westchester County can take advantage of a free early literacy program created by country music icon Dolly Parton that delivers books to children from birth through age 5.

Founded in 1995, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library aims to inspire a love of reading by providing free books to young children each month at no cost to families.

The program is currently available in White Plains, Peekskill and Port Chester.

Nearly 900 local families have enrolled in the program, according to the United Way of Westchester and Putnam, which helps administer the initiative in the region.

“Early childhood literacy has been shown to provide the foundation for all academic achievement, communication, success,” said Tom Gabriel, CEO of the United Way of Westchester and Putnam. “It's really the key to long-term lifelong success.”

The organization says interest in the program continues to grow, with 75 families in Westchester County signing up following her passing.

Families who live in participating communities can register to receive free books mailed directly to their homes.
