Nearly 200 dirt bikes and ATVs swarm Mercer County roads; rider arrested
A group of nearly 200 off-road vehicles swarmed Hamilton Township roadways Sunday, prompting a police response that resulted in the arrest of a Trenton man who allegedly attempted to flee from officers on a stolen dirt bike.
According to the Hamilton Police Division, officers were called to the area of Quakerbridge Road and Sloan Avenue after receiving reports of approximately 200 e-bikes, dirt bikes and ATVs blocking the roadway, damaging local property and operating off-road.
When police arrived at the location, a suspect later identified as Tyshawn Turner, 27, of Trenton, attempted to flee the scene on a dirt bike that had previously been reported stolen. Turner fell off the bike and was apprehended a short time later by officers, according to the police division.
Police said Turner was charged with resisting arrest, obstruction, and receiving stolen property. He was also issued multiple motor vehicle summonses for charges including driving while suspended, careless driving, reckless driving, operating an ATV on a public roadway and operating an unregistered and uninsured vehicle. He was transported to Mercer County Correctional facility.
In a statement, police said they will continue to address illegal e-bike, ATV and dirt bike activity in the township that "creates unsafe roadway conditions, disrupts traffic and damages property." Police said violators will be held accountable for their actions.
