If your summer plans don’t include a trip to the Amalfi Coast, don’t worry—your tastebuds can still make the journey.
June 22, marks National Limoncello Day, the perfect excuse to pour a glass of Italy’s famously vibrant, sweet, and tangy lemon liqueur.
To help mark the occasion, Ariana Capasso, the owner of Ciao and Cello, stopped by the News 12 studios to break down the history of the classic Italian staple and demonstrate exactly how to craft the perfect batch.
Originating in Southern Italy, authentic limoncello is crafted using just four simple ingredients: lemon zest, high-proof alcohol, water, and sugar.
Because it relies entirely on the essential oils of the peel rather thanthe juice, it boasts an intensely aromatic, bright citrus flavor without the sharp sourness of raw lemon juice.
Capasso explained that while the ingredients are straightforward, the process requires patience, as the lemon peels need time to steep in the alcohol to draw out those vibrant oils before the simple syrup is introduced.
For Capasso, sharing the craft goes far beyond just mixing a cocktail. Through hosting workshops and tastings, she has seen firsthand how the tradition connects people.
"It brings people together and it's an outlet for some," Capasso said, noting that the hands-on experience allows people to slow down, and bond over a shared love of Italian culture.
