The Fulton Street Bridge and South Street Bridge in Mount Vernon are reopening today, marking the first time in over 30 years that all of the city's MTA bridges are in service simultaneously.
The closures, which began in early 2022, were caused by unsafe pedestrian conditions and infrastructure issues.
The closures impacted local businesses, with one bodega owner telling News 12 it went from a two-minute walk across the bridge to a 10-minute detour, leading his customers to go elsewhere.
The closures also had a impact on emergency services in the city.
"For the last couple of years, police department vehicles, fire vehicles, emergency service has had to go around to get to calls, so this is definitely going to increase our response time," says Mount Vernon Police Department Chief Marcel Olifiers.
