A fast-moving fire ripped through a multifamily home on Bridgeport’s West Side on Wednesday morning, displacing six families and sending one person to the hospital.
The blaze broke out around 8:30 a.m. Fire officials said one person was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A woman who lives on the second floor said she had only seconds to grab her baby and flee after a neighbor pounded on her front door, shouting, “Fire, fire!”
Mayor Joe Ganim toured the site and met with displaced families.
The property is owned by the Bridgeport Housing Authority. City officials said they are working with the housing authority to secure temporary housing for the six displaced families.
Officials hope to find a longer-term solution before the single night of emergency shelter provided by the Red Cross ends.
The building sits next to the site of a three-alarm fire on Feb. 27, 2015, that destroyed three multifamily homes, heavily damaged a fourth and displaced 12 families.
The cause of Wednesday’s fire remains under investigation.
