For the athletes taking the field with the Point Pleasant Challenger Flag Football program, the game is about much more than scoring touchdowns.
The program gives children with special needs the chance to experience football while building confidence, making friends and learning the value of teamwork.
President and founder Dan Richards says the excitement surrounding game day can begin hours before players even arrive at the field.
“Mothers come up to me and say, ‘Dennis was up at 6:30 in the morning waiting for this game,’” Richards said. “That is what I love to hear. It’s fantastic.”
Along with learning the game, players have the opportunity to practice skills such as working together, following directions, staying focused, and supporting their teammates.
For Matthew Caccavano, who has been part of the team since 2019, returning to the field each year has become a tradition.
“I just love being here with my friends and playing the sport that we love,” Caccavano said.
The experience also extends to the program’s volunteers, who get a chance to build connections with the athletes and help create an environment where every player feels included.
“Kids with special needs are just like you and I,” Richards said. “They want the same things, they want to do the same things, and we try to give them that experience.”
Whether players are celebrating a touchdown or encouraging a teammate after a difficult play, the Point Pleasant Challenger Flag Football program is creating a community centered on friendship, confidence and acceptance.
