Basketball season is back in Hastings for a 25th season – a milestone built on helping kids learn, grow, and have fun in a low-pressure, community-driven environment.
Founded by psychologist Steve Tuber, the program was created as an alternative to highly competitive youth leagues. Tuber believed children thrive when sports are “intrinsically fun” — building intensity around personal bests, not beating opponents.
“These kids have grown as players, as students,” says Coach Jason Scheff.
Players agree, with Jack Rugg Rodriguez adding, “I like that everybody gets to learn.”
In Hastings Rec, everyone plays equal minutes, and mistakes aren’t just tolerated — they’re encouraged as part of learning.
“Seeing them take shots and not be afraid to make mistakes,” says coach Pat Heenan, is what success looks like.
Even the referees are local high school students, gaining experience while supporting younger players.
Every Saturday morning, the village comes together to enjoy the simple joy of the game.
