Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Thursday that more than $130 million in state aid will help get lead pipes out of local drinking water systems.

The funding will identify and replace lead service lines across communities in New York.

It is a part of the state’s Lead Infrastructure Forgiveness and Transformation (LIFT) program, which aims to help pay for projects protecting drinking water without overburdening taxpayers.

Officials say the projects will safeguard and improve public health in historically underserved areas.

“Our communities shouldn’t have to choose between protecting their drinking water and taking on crushing debt,” Hochul said in a press release. “Every family deserves clean, safe drinking water at a cost they can afford, and these grants will help us make that goal a reality.”
