Gov. Ned Lamont announced Tuesday that nearly 100,000 residents will soon have their medical debt erased.

More than 97,000 residents will receive letters this week, informing them that some or all or their medical debt has been erased. It's part of an initiative the state launched with the nonprofit Undue Medical Debt to help residents who struggle to pay outstanding medical bills.

The program is designed for residents whose income is at or below four times the federal poverty level or have medical debt that is %5 or more of their income. The current federal poverty level is an annual income at or below $33,000 for a family of four.

This is the fourth round of the initiative and will eliminate nearly $315 million in debt.

Since the program launched in 2024, more than 252,000 residents have had their debt canceled.
