A Monmouth County school district is banning metal water bottles from classrooms, a decision that is getting pushback from some parents.
Howell school officials said the bottles are heavy and can cause serious injuries if used in a fight.
Students who bring metal water bottles to school will be required to turn them in.
"Our family, like many others, has chosen metal and glass water bottles for the health and environmental benefits they provide. The move to only allow plastic may seem trivial, but it is deeply concerning for multiple reasons," Christine Bastardi wrote in the petition.
The ban will take effect at the start of the 2026-27 school year.
