Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani announced an endorsement on Saturday in a key open Assembly race.

The mayor-elect returned to familiar ground in Astoria to endorse Diana Moreno for his soon-to-be-vacant Assembly seat. He called Moreno a friend and said they share the same agendas.

“I see in her what I see in me — the same part of this movement,” said Mamdani. “A movement that is hungry to deliver for working-class people.”

Moreno said she plans to support the mayor-elect’s agenda in Albany.

“I will be the unwavering ally he will need to deliver on his affordability agenda and to fight back against the rising tide of fascism,” Moreno said.

Moreno, a self-described socialist, is a Queens resident, a mother and an immigrant from Ecuador. She has worked alongside Mamdani for five years, sharing priorities such as universal childcare and affordable housing.

Following Saturday’s endorsement — and last week’s endorsement of Brad Lander for Congress — Mamdani was asked who he might support in the upcoming governor’s race.

“It will always come back to who will be able to fight for the people of this city, especially for the future they so deeply deserve,” Mamdani said.

Several positions within the new administration also remain unfilled. Additional announcements are expected in the coming weeks, as the mayor-elect highlights what he says will be the positive impact of his appointments.

Mamdani also praised his choice for deputy mayor, Julie Su.

“I’m so excited by our deputy mayor, Julie Su, who has a track record of fighting for workers across this country and the potential to bring that same fight right here to New York City,” he said.

With his inauguration less than two weeks away, Mamdani says details about the ceremony are expected to be announced on Sunday.
