A Mattituck family is transforming unimaginable heartbreak into hope for others after the loss of their teenage son, whose determination and spirit continue to inspire the North Fork community.
Bryan and Marissa Drago are keeping the memory of their son, Gavyn Drago, alive while working to make a difference for people living with epilepsy.
Gavyn, 17, died in September following an epileptic seizure.
"The loss of our son was devastating. Really that first week we didn't even know what to do with ourselves," Marissa Drago said.
Gavyn had lived most of his life with epilepsy, but those who knew him say he never allowed the condition to define him. An accomplished distance runner, he completed five half-marathons before turning 16.
"He would always set a goal and he would always exceed it at every race. We were always blown away by that," Bryan Drago said.
His perseverance left a lasting impression not only on teammates and friends, but also on his family.
"I think for that reason he really is an inspiration to so many people," Marissa Drago said. "Including his parents."
Now, that inspiration is fueling a new effort to support epilepsy research and awareness.
The family recently established the Gavyn Avery Drago Foundation, which aims to improve treatments for epilepsy and ultimately help find a cure. As part of those efforts, the foundation will host "Gavyn's Favorite 5K" on Sunday, October 18 at Orient Beach State Park, a course Gavyn loved to run.
The event is expected to draw runners, walkers and supporters from across the North Fork, many of whom have embraced Gavyn's motto of living with purpose and compassion. Community members have been wearing wristbands bearing the message: "Run with purpose. Live with heart."
Gavyn served as captain of his high school's track and cross-country teams, making him a respected leader both on and off the course. Those who knew him say the upcoming event is about more than a race. It's about honoring a young man who inspired others through his resilience, determination and kindness.
