A large-scale illegal gambling and cockfighting operation was uncovered Saturday when state police executed a search and seizure warrant on Mountain Spring Road in Tolland. Police say the warrant followed a lengthy investigation into illegal gambling and cockfighting events allegedly held inside the residence.
During the search, troopers took 100 people into custody and seized approximately $90,000 in U.S. currency. The Connecticut Department of Agriculture located 273 birds on the property, all of which were euthanized due to their deteriorated condition.
Homeowners Elvin Miranda, 59, and Lisa Miranda, 66, were arrested on scene and charged with cruelty to animals, professional gambling, operating a gambling premise and risk of injury to a minor, according to police. They were released after posting a $250,000 bond and are scheduled to appear in GA 19 Rockville Superior Court on June 18.
