A 12-year-old girl is fighting for her life after police say she and her mother were stabbed in a domestic attack inside their Crotona Park East apartment late Wednesday night.
Police have charged 28-year-old Joshua Burnside after investigators say he attacked his 31-year-old ex-wife and their 12-year-old daughter just before midnight on the 1000 block of East 173rd Street.
Detectives say the mother was stabbed in the body and slashed in the face, while her daughter was slashed in the face and stabbed multiple times in the head. Two other children — a 2-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy — were also inside the home but were not hurt.
Neighbors say the mother came running down the hallway, pounding on doors and begging for help.
“It was like four or five doors she pounded on. We came outside and she was bleeding from her abdomen, so we were trying to figure out what was going on,” said one neighbor.
“It was very devastating. I’m very sad and then once she started saying that there were kids there that’s why he was like, 'Oh my God,' you know you’re here, the kids are up there, what’s going on?”
Police say all four children were taken to a hospital, where the 12-year-old remains in critical condition.
The attack comes just days after Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced a new domestic violence investigative unit that will add 450 officers citywide dedicated to handling cases like this.
