A man was arrested Tuesday night after fleeing a traffic stop in Southington and traveling into Plainville.
Police attempted to stop the man on Queen Street in Southington after observing a traffic light violation, but as they approached the car, he sped away at a high rate of speed through active traffic.
Officers did not pursue the car because a chase would put other motorists and pedestrians at risk, but they alerted other agencies of the incident.
A short time later, Plainville police saw the car operating recklessly and failing to stop.
Officers located the vehicle, and the driver attempted to flee on foot before being taken into custody.
Police say 37-year-old Giordano Marcone, of Wolcott, was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including engaging police in pursuit, reckless driving, operating under the influence, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, and drug-related charges.
Southington police say they have seen an increase in eluding motor vehicle incidents in recent years, rising from 24 incidents in 2023 to 84 in 2024, and approximately 92 incidents in 2025. In 2026, the department has already encountered 15 such incidents.
