Two years after the murder of a Sayreville councilwoman, the man accused of shooting Eunice Dwumfour is on trial.
The case is taking place in New Brunswick at the Middlesex County Courthouse.
In their first words to jurors in opening arguments, the prosecution said that Eunice Dwumfour was executed by defendant Rashid Bynum.
The prosecution explained that Bynum shot into Dwumfour’s car 15 times as she sat in the driver’s seat.
The state told jurors that during the trial, they will present DNA evidence to prove Bynum is her killer.
Specifically, Assistant Middlesex County prosecutor Tzvi Dolinger told jurors that detectives found that gun, a Glock 19, at the home of Bynum’s girlfriend.
“The ballistics results showed the 15 cartridge casings left when he murdered Eunice were discharged from that Glock 19 and the defendants DNA were found in the slide and grip," said Dolinger.
The prosecutor explained that police found Bynum through a digital trail of cellphone and E-ZPass data.
Jurors then saw dashcam and body cam video of the crime scene before hearing from two neighbors who witnessed the shooting.
“He had his hood up, I saw either braids or dreads down to the bottom of his earlobes," said neighbor John DiGironimo.
“I watched him let off multiple rounds into the driver side window of the white SUV," said Olatende Akinrolabu, another neighbor from the complex about the night of Feb. 1, 2023.
When given the chance, defense attorney Michael Ashley said Bynum didn’t shoot her.
Ashley said that Bynum had no motive, hadn’t been speaking with her and had no animosity toward Dwumfour.
“None of the eyewitnesses saw a man consistent with Mr. Bynum’s appearance, said Michael Ashley," he said.
In all, the state put five witnesses on the stand on Day 1 of the trial.
Court is not in session on Friday.
The trial will resume on Tuesday.
