It's Friday and that means it's time for Main Street, Connecticut a chance when we get to showcase many of the things our local towns and our cities have to offer. This week. We're in Norwalk News. 12, Connecticut Mark. So all, is it two letters this morning? For what you cooking already? Oh, yeah. Becky. I got the hat on waiting to get all the fixings going here. This is Stu's Thanksgiving meal for eight. It's 25 bucks a person. It's a pretty good deal. And it looks amazing. And I love Thanksgiving the football. But I mean, I love turkey. It's so good. Rich Dibble is a chef here. He's been here for 30 years. This guy knows about turkeys. And let me ask you, first of all, what kind of a turkey should people buy? Well, this bird right here is the, uh, stew Leonard's Naked Bird. What's call points with? This is one, it's antibiotic free. Second, it's 50% white meat and 50% less fat on this bird than a normal bird. You could, you purchase one right, right in our stores right there. But I mean, this said, I think a turkey you know, the naked turkey is a good way to go and again, fresh, not frozen, fresh, not frozen and ready. You know, this, you open this up. I would, you know, you should buy, you could buy your turkey today for Thanksgiving, you know, leave it in your coolest part of your refrigerator bottom and it would be ready for Thanksgiving day. Uh So how should people store before they, they cook it coldest part of the refrigerator, just leave it, leave it in there, let it, it'll, it, it's gonna feel a little firm just because it's chilled and then leaving the coldest part and then the day that you're gonna cook it, take it out about two, like a couple of hours before you're gonna cook it and let it kind of temper to room temperature. That's when you would clean it out and uh, do what you like with it. Now, now we've also heard too that do you stuff it beforehand afterward? What do you do? Well, I've cooked a lot of turkeys in my life and I can tell you, I prefer no stuffing inside. So my wife wins the battle at home every year. But the turkeys that we cook, we, I prefer to put aromatics inside which you use orange celery, little marsala wine, spices inside the bird. It actually cooks a little bit better and it's a little safer at home than cooking the stuffing inside. You can always put the stuffing in a pan in it, in it and kind of use a little of the turkey juice drizzle to get it, get the taste and the flavor. It's Friday. That means it's time for Main Street Connecticut, a chancellor. And we showcase some of the things our local towns and cities have to offer. This week we're in Norwalk News. 12, Connecticut's Mark. Sudal is at ST Leonards this morning for us. Mark. Good morning, Becky. It's that time of year. You want to start thinking about Christmas and maybe getting a Christmas tree. Now, stew's trees come from Canada and up there they were not affected by the drought like we were here. So these trees are in great shape. Andrew Hollis is here. He knows all about these trees. You got a lot of them. How do we pick out a tree? Well, first of all, we get, like you said, we get our trees from Canada. It's a great grower up there we've been working with for over 30 years. His name is Pierre and he gives us some awesome trees that are, are very good in this cold weather. The best way to really see if you've got a strong tree. This is our fraser fir. It's our best seller. Now, this is called the Needle Test. So what you want to do is, you want to just pull the needles like this? See, they got one there but pretty good. You don't want any needles on your hand. That's really the best test to make sure you have a good strong tree. So, how far in advance should you buy a tree? I mean, look, obviously they're real. So with the heat in your house time, they're going to kind of die on. Absolutely. So, Thanksgiving is a week later this year. So you want to get your tree as soon as possible, which is totally fine. You have to give it a fresh cut here at stews and water, water, water. So that's the most important thing, right? When you get home, make sure you get that thing in the stand and water as much as possible. How about the prices this year? Pretty good. Prices are good. So prices are steady as they were last year. You know, like we have a great grower family business out there in Canada. And so he kept our prices exactly flat as they were last year and we saw the big flatbed coming in this morning with all the trees too. What do you have here? So this is the other thing. This is like a Gatorade for your tree. It's called miracle tree. Ok. So this is very important when you get home, you want to water it with this, put this in your, in your tree. Um It's totally safe. So we can actually drink it right now. Are you kidding me? If you want to take a switch? This isn't like, you know, washer fluid or something like that. Right. There we go. Ok. Right. Toast. I feel like I'm growing at this very moment. You might be 68 in the morning. So I'm branching out Becky. Coming up in our next hour, we'll still be in Norwalk. This week we're in Norwalk News 12, Connecticut's Mark. Sudal is an open door shelter for us. Mark Good morning, Becky. Yeah, open doors has done so much for folks in Norwalk dealing with poverty and homelessness for over 40 years. Now. By the way, they have the New Canaan Turkey Trough that's coming up this weekend. That is a fundraiser for open doors. Joining us this morning is chef t she has made some magic happen here at open doors for almost a decade. Now, what does it mean to you to do what you do here being able to give back is one of the number one things that I love to do, putting a smile on a family's face is number two, most of all making the Children know that they have some type of food on their tables to be able to eat. Now, we have Thanksgiving coming up next week and not every shelter does Thanksgiving on Thanksgiving Day. But you guys do tell us about it. Yes, we'll be doing Thanksgiving on Thanksgiving day. I'm going to prepare the day before because I won't be here on Thanksgiving Day. So we'll be having all the good stuff to turkey. Um, the mashed potatoes, the rice, the green beans, the stuff, and the cranberry sauce, the pie, the beverages and everything and it's opened up to the entire community. Yes. Now, this is fantastic. What you do all year long, But that's the thing. Thanksgiving is one day out of the year. What about the rest of the year? Oh, the rest this never stops. We give, we give, we give, we give, we also have a food pantry. They're allowed to come shopping there every two weeks. They are allowed to come to the food pantry, get a grocery, they go shopping just like they're in a grocery store. We also have a kitchen, our kitchen here at the shelter, we give out two meals a day. Anyone is welcome. The difference in the pantry. You have to sign up here. You don't have to sign up. So no one in Norwalk ever have to be hungry. You get two free meals a day and that means a lot. That is amazing. We saw a little bit of your interaction with, with some of the folks here. It is, it is really touching. Thank you. Thank you. You have to, you know, now being in the shelter, they're in a vulnerable part of their lives because they're in a situation that they don't want to be in. So you have to make them feel comfortable, you know, don't make a person feel strange or like they're no good. They are someone just as well as we all are. Chef.
