The Pequot Library's 65th annual summer book sale is going on this weekend. It's one of New England's biggest and best with over 100,000 items. Newswe, Connecticut's Mark Sudall is in Southport with a preview in this week's Main Street, Connecticut. As a book lover, I absolutely love this, Mark. Oh, you've got to check this out. Starts today, runs through Tuesday. People are already lining up, waiting to get in these tents and see all the magic in there. I wanna introduce you to Peter Van Heerden with uh the library. He came all the way from South Africa just to tell us some stories here. Uh, first of all, where do you get all these books? Yeah, so look, it's incredible. I mean, this is my first book sale. We have a drop off point here at the Peiwa Library, and people sort of scour their houses, their barns, their family collections, and they continually, every single day, people are just dropping off books and collections. It's really incredible. I mean what's inside those tents is mind blowing. I've never seen so many books, so get down here today, Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Take the books off our hands because it's our biggest charity of the year, so we need your support. People need to get rid of their books so we can fill it up again for next year. Now, look, people are dropping off these books. Do you find any interesting things inside? Oh my God, I mean Doug could tell you stories. Some people phone like, Oh, I left $100 in this book. Can you give it to me? or my grandmother's bookmark. I think I believe this. Week someone phoned and said they'd left a pearl inside a book and asked Doug to get a pearl, so yeah, I mean it's people's treasures that they sort of hide things in and keep things in and you know the grandfather's bookmark or something, so yeah, it's a fascinating, it's people's lives, you know, it's historic lives and families, it's like heirlooms and heritage sort of taken off the bookshelf and. Ended up in the peakot, so you know you never know what you're going to find inside that tent. That is amazing. Now what about the volunteers? Yes, look, I mean this is an army of volunteers. Like there's over 100 people dedicated to selling these books online, putting them together, sorting them, and making what happens inside that tent happen. So Doug is the maestro of these volunteers, and they are a dedicated force of nature. I think that sort of pulls us together, the staff, the team, you know, and this is a village event. It takes the entire village and the entire community, but yeah, our volunteers are something else. We're so proud of them and we are so honored to have them sort of bring this fundraiser and this book sale to life for us every single year and good deals. What prices are we talking? Oh look, I think you can pick up books in there. Some of our staff yesterday were like, I can't. At least some of the books people were checking out, that was only $4. I should have bought that. So yeah, I mean I think there's deals in there from the hundreds of dollars down to $2 down to $4. So there's something for everybody. Yeah. Wow, Peter, thank you so much for the time.
