Nicolás Maduro said he was captured in Venezuela, and called it a “kidnapping." He said he believes he is being illegally detained.

When Judge Hellerstein asked how he pleaded, Nicolás Maduro responded, “I am innocent. I am not guilty. I am a decent man.”

Cilia Maduro introduced herself as the first lady of Venezuela. When she asked how she pleaded, she responded, “Not guilty. Completely innocent.”

Both Venezuelan leaders pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The Maduros waived their right to a speedy trial and to set bail.

Their legal team claims Nicolás Maduro is the leader of a sovereign state and they are questioning if his capture is a violation of international law.

Both defendants are due back in court on March 17.
