Two Macy's locations in Brooklyn are shutting their doors for good.
Macy's announced that its Downtown Brooklyn store on Fulton Street and another location in Sheepshead Bay are among 66 stores across the country slated to close this year.
The closures are part of Macy's "Bold New Chapter" strategy, which aims to streamline operations by focusing on stronger-performing locations and enhancing both in-store and online shopping experiences. Over the next three years, Macy's plans to close 150 underperforming stores while investing in its top 350 stores nationwide.
In a statement, Macy's CEO Tony Spring said, "Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy's stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service."
The news has shocked shoppers and workers in Brooklyn.
"It's been here for ages. Losing this store wouldn't be great. Where are we supposed to go? TJ Maxx closed, Nordstrom Rack closed—now Macy's too? What are they going to put here?," says longtime customer Lisa.
Another shopper, Edd, expressed disbelief, saying, "I would have never guessed Macy's would be underperforming. Everybody shops here, especially after the holidays."
The company has confirmed that going-out-of-business sales will begin soon, offering shoppers one last chance to visit the store before it closes its doors permanently.
