The Town of Babylon is ramping up enforcement efforts targeting illegal, heavily modified vehicles equipped with oversized speakers that blast loud music and disrupt neighborhoods.
On Memorial Day, the town’s Investigation Unit and Public Safety Officers responded to a surge of noise complaints at 1 Adams Boulevard in Farmingville. When they arrived, investigators found vehicles outfitted with custom sound systems specifically designed to amplify music at extreme volumes over long distances.
Town officials say during the summer, they will be aggressively targeting the gatherings.
“Residents and business owners should not have to endure excessive noise from these illegal sound systems disrupting their quality of life,” said town supervisor Rich Schaffer. “We will continue taking strong enforcement action against anyone operating these modified vehicles in violation of our ordinances."
On May 18, several vehicles were spotted at the same location blasting music, noise complaints came in from residents in three towns - Farmingdale, West Babylon and Lindenhurst.
Those caught using rooftop speaker systems could face fines, legal action and seizure of their speaker equipment.
The town is also urging the public to help curb the issue. Residents who see these systems being installed or used are asked to call 631-957-8696.
