For the second time in three years, a trio of Long Island Lutheran High School girls' basketball players are headed to the McDonald's All-American game. Olivia Jones, of Bay Shore, and her teammates Erin McDonald and Savannah Swords were presented with their All-American jerseys in a ceremony at the Old Brookville School on Wednesday. The recognition is the highest honor a high school basketball player can achieve.
"It's honestly one of the greatest honors you could ever have as a high school basketball player," Jones said. "You know, being able to join my name with ..... my past teammates is just so surreal to be able to say you're a McDonald's All-American." It marks the second time the school sends three players to the game, which no other school has ever done. In 2024, Savannah Swords' sister, Syla Swords, was also one of a trio of players to get the honor. Syla now stars at Michigan. Their father, Shawn Swords, is the associate head coach of the Long Island Nets. "One of the really special facts about this group is all three of these players came in unranked," head coach Christina Raiti said. "So a lot of them, they chose to be a part of something that was bigger than themselves. They took a chance on the program and they've elevated it to unbelievable heights, and left the program better than when they found it." The trio will take the court in the McDonald's All-American game in Arizona on March 31.
