A Revolutionary War hero is being honored in Croton-on-Hudson.

John Patterson was an African American patriot whose life spanned more than 100 years.

A historic marker was unveiled Monday at the Bethel Cemetery in his honor. It details the legacy he leaves behind.

"He served three years as a continental soldier in Colonel Philip Van Cortlandt's 2nd New York Regiment and fought at Saratoga, Monmouth and Newtown. He survived horrible winters at Valley Forge and Morristown," says the historical marker in part.

Patterson did a lot in his life.

"He distinguished himself locally in vicious skirmishes at Purchase and Croton Point. At one time, he was captured and imprisoned in occupied New York, but escaped," reads the marker.

Patterson went on to raise a large family in Cortlandt.

"My own mom researched it for many years. I am pretty proud and glad that it's being recognized," said Judith Moshier Taylor, a descendant of Patterson.

Leaders with the American Legion Fox Eklof Post 505 told News 12 that a lot of research went into this honor.

"He risked his life and he risked his personal freedom for our liberties and our country's independence," said Edmund Riely Jr., legion historian.
