A 24-year-old Little Egg Harbor man has been charged with aggravated arson after authorities said he threw a flaming device at a home, causing a fire on the front porch.
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office said John Algor Jr. was charged July 2 with aggravated arson, possession of a destructive device and hindering apprehension in connection with the July 1 incident.
Police and firefighters responded to a home on Oneida Lake Drive at about 11:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a structure fire. Authorities said the homeowner extinguished the fire with a garden hose before first responders arrived.
An investigation determined the fire originated in the northwest corner of the front porch and was intentionally set using combustible material soaked in an ignitable liquid and placed inside a glass container, according to prosecutors.
Investigators said surveillance and other evidence showed an individual arriving at the home on a motorcycle, lighting an object on fire and throwing it at the residence before fleeing. Authorities identified the suspect as Algor.
Detectives arrested Algor at his home on July 2 without incident. Prosecutors said investigators found a motorcycle with its license plates removed and covered by a tarp at the home.
Algor was taken to the Ocean County Jail, where he is being held pending a detention hearing.
