For 65 years, the Levittown Florist And Flowers By Phil has bloomed and grown with the community, but now it will close its doors by Memorial Day.
The decades-old family-run business says their landlord is selling the property the family has operated the flower shop from for three generations.
Mary Lou Fuelling, who’s helped out at the business for 45 years, says it all started in 1960 when Levittown's first homeowner, Phillip Heron, decided to open his own business.
"Phil worked in the garden center and he decided he wanted to open his own flower business,” she said,
Heron passed away in 1987, but the shop passed to his nephew and his nephew’s family.
To this day, family is central to its operations.
"Over the years, even my family, my brothers would come and help deliver,” said Fuelling. “My sister came and helped take phone calls on the holidays and whatever. It was always family."
Even though the sweet smell of flowers in the air won't be at the store on Hempstead Turnpike for much longer, the impact this family business has had on the Levittown community will be felt forever.
"It's very sad that we have to leave,” said Fuelling. “It just became a part of everybody and a part of the family. It feels good to know that we made it this far."
Staff say they could not have made it this far without the unwavering support of their customers over the last six decades.
The store will close its doors by Memorial Day weekend.
