Two juveniles were injured Wednesday evening after their gas-powered minibike collided with a minivan near Pine Lake Park in Manchester Township.
The crash occurred around 6:36 p.m. at the intersection of Commonwealth Boulevard and Pemberton Street. According to police, a 14-year-old girl was operating a red minibike with a 13-year-old female passenger when they failed to stop at a posted stop sign while traveling northbound on Pemberton Street.
The minibike entered the intersection and was struck by a westbound 2012 Toyota Sienna, resulting in a right-angle collision that ejected both juveniles onto the roadway. Police noted that neither juvenile was wearing a helmet.
The 13-year-old passenger was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The 14-year-old operator reported an ankle injury but refused medical treatment at the scene.
The driver of the Toyota, 36-year-old Rachel Lew of Lakewood, and two juvenile passengers in the minivan were uninjured.
Multiple witnesses confirmed the sequence of events, according to investigators. Commonwealth Boulevard was closed for about 30 minutes while emergency crews cleared the scene.
The investigation is ongoing, though the department’s Traffic Safety Unit identified the minibike's failure to obey the stop sign as the primary contributing factor.
