A Bergen County jury has awarded a $14 million verdict to three women who were sexually assaulted by their doctor. The allegations were the subject of a recent Kane In Your Corner investigation.
“I think that there wasn't a dry eye in the courtroom when the verdicts were being announced,” says attorney Kate Carballo, who represented the women. “We really feel like we had our day in court. The girls reached out to the jury and the jury was able to hear them.”
The plaintiffs were sexually assaulted by Dr. Carl Renner, whose practice is located in Hasbrouck Heights. Two of them described their experiences in a recent Kane In Your Corner investigation.
“He was trying to get into my underwear,” Rosemarie Safarian recalled. “I had to fight him off.”
“He would kiss me forcefully and put his tongue in my mouth,” added Suzanne Brown. “I had gone in for a chest cold and ended up having a pelvic exam with no explanation as to why.”
Renner pleaded guilty to sexual assault and was sentenced to probation. He also agreed to surrender his medical license.
Safarian, Brown and a third former patient sued the medical practice, Osler Medical Group. They alleged the practice was made aware of Renner’s conduct as far back as 2008 and should have done something about it. The jury agreed.
Under the verdict, Brown will receive $4 million, Safarian and her husband will receive $4 million, and the third plaintiff will receive $6 million. News 12 is not identifying her because she is a survivor of sexual assault who did not choose to do an on-camera interview.
An administrator with Osler Medical Group told Kane In Your Corner that the practice had no comment on the verdict.
