There are mixed emotions in the Park City as fans of the Bridgeport Islanders begin to bid farewell to their hockey team of 25 years.
The AHL Board of Governors
recently approved the organization's move to Hamilton, Ontario.
"It's sad, very sad." Lori Uilecan says. "This team meant a lot to a lot of us."
The news comes around the same time the Connecticut Sun announced it would be leaving for Houston in 2027.
Bridgeport plays its final regular season home game this Sunday, but the team could play additional home games if it makes the AHL playoffs.
"It's going to be sad," season ticket holder Kerry Vigilane says. "It's going to be a sad day on Sunday."
Even though the hockey team is leaving as the Bridgeport Islanders, many will remember them fondly as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
"It's hard to summarize 25 years," Uilecan says. "It's been a family, those of us who have been here for 25 years, and even some of the newer families that have been here just a few years. It's been a family."
Sunday's puck drop is scheduled for 5 p.m.
