The Islip School Board revealed the findings of multiple investigations into Superintendent Dennis O'Hara, who has been on home assignment since late August.
While the investigations cleared O'Hara of any wrongdoing, the question of his return to work remains unresolved, causing frustration among some parents.
O'Hara was accused of taking photos of female lifeguards while working a summer job at a state park.
He denied the allegations, explaining that he had taken the photos to raise awareness about the lifeguards' lack of official uniforms.
The state of New York conducted an investigation into the matter and found no violations of sexual harassment policies.
The Islip School District conducted its own review, which reached a similar conclusion.
Paul Austin, vice president of the Islip School Board, stated, "The district counsel’s review of this matter, including interviews with lifeguards and supervisors, found no additional information to challenge the state’s findings."
Additionally, an outside investigator was brought in to examine claims that O'Hara had shared a photo more than 20 years ago at a different school district where he previously worked.
District officials did not provide further details on the alleged incident but confirmed that the investigation found the claim lacked factual support.
Despite the cleared allegations, tensions among parents are rising.
Some voiced their displeasure with the situation, particularly regarding O'Hara's continued public salary without a clear role.
"Is Dr. O'Hara coming back to work?" one parent, Denise Nash, asked. "If that’s what this is for, I’m putting my vote in: no."
The board was also pressed about O'Hara's current activities while on leave, especially as he continues to collect a publicly funded salary.
Acting Superintendent Kathleen O’Callaghan clarified that O'Hara has been consulted on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, but no additional details were provided.
When asked for a timeline on when a decision regarding O'Hara's future would be made, board members stated it would happen “very soon.”
