An investigation is underway after an inmate died Thursday at the Hartford Correctional Center.

According to the Department of Correction, Jayshawn Johnson was taken out of the facility for medical treatment. Officials said he was conscious when he entered the ambulance but died when they arrived at the hospital.

The state medical examiner is working to determine his cause of death.
