ICE officials say the preliminary cause of death of a detainee at a Nassau jail appears to be liver failure.
Santos Reyes-Banegas, a 42-year-old ICE detainee who was held at the Nassau County Correctional Center in East Meadow, died on Sept. 18, ICE officials say.
Officials say he was processed at the jail one day earlier, and per protocol, went through medical intake, but was discovered unresponsive in his cell less than 18 hours after his arrival.
The cause of death is still under investigation, ICE says, but it appears that alcoholism complications led to liver failure.
Reyes-Benegas was a Honduran national who entered the United States illegally four times, according to ICE.
He entered the U.S. a fourth time at an unknown date and time and was arrested on Sept. 17 by ICE Long Island Fugitive Operations.
He was given a notice of intent to reinstate a prior deportation order when arrested.
