A Hudson Valley school district is cracking down on drivers who illegally pass its buses. It's a project that has been years in the making.

The school buses within the Hendrick Hudson School District are being equipped with cameras that will catch drivers who disobey the stop arm when the bus is stopped.

The program is being done through an organization called "Buspatrol." The cameras that are equipped on the school buses capture drivers who are illegally passing them. The cameras are activated by the school bus stop arm.

Officials with the school say during the pilot study of the cameras, more than 350 incidents of people passing the school buses with the stop-arms out were recorded. That was within a six-week period.

"All the children here are going to be that much safer getting on and off the buses," says Hendrick Hudson School District transportation supervisor Elizabeth Gilleo.

Gilleo says they are planning for all the buses to have the cameras by the end of October.

If caught, the first ticket will cost $225. It goes up from there with a maximum ticket cost of $275.
