Pool director Nicole Higgins, with Chemka Pool in Hastings-on-Hudson, shared advice for enjoying the pool safely during extreme weather.
On Tuesday, News 12 meteorologists confirmed temperatures hit a high of 97 degrees in portions of Westchester County, making it the hottest day of the year so far.
In Hastings-on-Hudson, Higgins says she had a total of 14 lifeguards on staff for the day due to the extreme weather.
She also says a couple of hundred residents were expected to make their way to the three-pool facility throughout the day.
On days like Tuesday, she said that heightened supervision of the pool is key.
"We're looking for kids not to be doing any...holding-breath challenges, that parents are swimming with children or nannies, whosoever here with them...making sure kids who aren't the best swimmers can actually be with someone who is watching them," said Higgins.
She and many other parents also recommended teaching children how to swim as early as possible to prevent accidents.
She said there is one big reason why she sees children struggle in the water.
"It's more kids who have a false sense of security who think they're a better swimmer than they are and they try to get out too far...parents not being there with them...because even with lifeguards, there's still a lot of people in the pool," she says.
Staff also offered advice for any other lifeguards or people working outside in the grueling temperatures.
"A lot of water with electrolytes, really important, I'm on my third serving today...and shade," said a fifth-year lifeguard with the pool.
Staying hydrated and in shade, and using sunscreen was additional advice focused on throughout the day.
