The clock is ticking for Hofstra University to reach a deal with its faculty.

Union professors are threatening to walk off the job on the first day of class over a contract dispute.

The Hofstra chapter of the American Association of University Professors voted last month to allow the strike.

The union wants better pay and affordable health care in the new contract by Aug. 31.

A university spokesperson told News 12 that they are hoping to reach a fair resolution that is also financially suitable for the school.

When asked if a contingency plan is in place, the spokesperson said they are preparing for a range of outcomes.
