As Black History Month comes to an end, Bronx students in Highbridge took center stage to celebrate Black culture and history in an "out of this world" showcase.
The non-profit WHEDco works with some of the school's students in an after-school program to host an annual Black History Month Showcase. This year's theme was "Over the Moon."
The students highlighted various African American pioneers in music, fashion, boxing and more.
"You see a lot of like moon in space just because Black history is out of this world, just giving homage to our history, the people who paved the way," shared Lael Warr, the program director of WHEDco Highbridge Green School.
WHEDco offers a plethora of different arts to students, allowing them to shine their light in ways they feel are important to who they are.
"Black History Month, to me, it means to remember what past people have done for us, like people from the past. It also speaks out to me as somebody who was also Black. So, I remember I'm not the only one going through this. People have been in my shoes before. People know what I'm going through," said student Osato Oriekhoe.
"We should honor our ancestry and the people that fought for us, that fought for us to be in the schools, that fought for us to have all the privileges we have today. And they also fought to invent things that maybe we wouldn't have today," stated student Xena Lynn.
The showcase was performed in front of the students' families, peers and faculty.
